Powell served 35 years in the Army, rising to the rank of four-star general and served as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the Department of Defense. Kirstie Ennis, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired), for a bonus installment of Veterans Voices. Ennis is the daughter of two Marines whose example inspired her to join the at the age of 17. Deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, Ennis was in a traumatic helicopter accident. After more than 40 surgeries and the amputation of her left leg, she has become a role model and inspiration for others worldwide.
Ennis founded a non-profit, became an avid and accomplished mountain climber and snowboarder, a stuntwoman in the movie Patriots Day, walked 1,000 miles across the U.K., was featured in ESPN The Magazine and People Magazine, is a motivational speaker and Vetrepreneur. She also completed three master’s degrees, and is working on her education doctorate. If you haven’t seen We The People: A Virtual Tour, take a moment this weekend to preview the portraits and hear artist Mary Whyte share the story behind her cross-country journey to located and paint a Veteran from each state — works that in total reflect the diversity of our nation. The virtual art tour runs 24 minutes and provides a deeper understand of Whyte’s intentions prior to appreciating her intricately detailed portraits in person.
